27.001 Effect of star light in newly formed air cylinder mirror

01] This third air region, which, as already noted above, rests as a purest, therefore also most transparent, like an etheric oil on the second air region, has, with the already mentioned properties, also this very particular, that it extreme easily ignites through any disturbance; but particularly easily ignitable it is at those places, where any body, as for example a meteorite (meteor stone) gets into its region and cuts through it so to speak an significant distance. This ignition is however of very peculiar kind, and that therefore, because no burning takes place. It is a shining, but no burning. To explain this shining and this very special way of ignition, will of course be certainly a little difficult in your estimation; but nevertheless we will strive to make the thing as clear as possible.

11] Now see, since we once have discussed the act of ignition as comprehensible as possible for you, so it is now easy, to explain the ignition of this ether air content in the third air region, when it is disturbed through a body in its usual rest. A meteor falling or flying through this third air sphere of course tears the air apart; as a result this air gets a hollow space on account of the usually very fast movement of such bodies. But this hollow space forms a mirror surface, in which at that moment the light rays of innumerable stars concentrate like in a concave mirror, or even better like in a cylinder mirror, and this radiation reflex has, seen from earth, the appearance of a fire; alone it is no fire at all, but merely the reflecting, above described effect of the star light in the newly formed air cylinder mirror.

12] This appearance in this third air region is therefore a very particular property of exactly this third air region, because a same appearance cannot occur in the lower air regions, because in them the air is too heavy and collapses too fast behind a body cutting through it, while the very light air of the third region only successively (i.e. gradually) collapses, for which cause behind such a flying meteor still a long, dragon like tail is seen.
