Researchers teleport signals through cities
The technique of quantum teleportation promises tap-proof communication for physical reasons, what among other things is of great interest for banks and insurance companies as well as security authorities and secret services. In the process the information is "beamed" from one place to the other.
Simplified the principle works like this: A pair of so-called entangled light particles (photons) is produced. Quantum physically they form a common state, which also remains in existence when both photons are separated spatially. One of the entangled photons is now send to the sender, the other to the recipient.
The sender entangles his photon with a further one, which carries the information, which is to be sent. As a result the quantum state of this third photon passes to the remote photon at the recipient – the information was teleported. An eavesdropper in the line would have to intercept the recipient photons, however cannot replace them, so that the bugging operation immediately attracts attention.
There are though doubts about the invulnerability for a short time: With a trick researchers had recently outwitted the technique of quantum cryptography.
