Photoelectric effect

Liberation of electrons from the surface of a material when light, ultraviolet radiation, X-rays, or gamma rays fall on it. The effect can be explained only by quantum theory: Photons in the radiation are absorbed by atoms in the substance and enable electrons to escape by transferring energy to them.
