'New Horizons' discovers second mountain range on Pluto
The US space probe "New Horizons" has sent new pictures of Pluto, which shows a second mountain range on the dwarf planet. The summits are to be covered with ice.
The probe "New Horizons" has sighted a second mountain range on the dwarf planet Pluto. It lies north west of the already known icy summit and is probably a little lower, announced the US space agency Nasa on Wednesday. The newly discovered mountains are also covered with ice. "New Horizons" had taken the new picture last week from about 77 000 kilometres distance and sent to Earth on Monday.
After more than nine years and five billion kilometres "New Horizons" had been flying past Pluto as first earthly flying object in the past week and had investigated it with seven scientific instruments. Until all data and pictures taken at the fly-by are sent to Earth it will still take 16 months.
